Create and use rule types

A Rule Type is a label for what a rule's match means, such as Ineligible, Needs review or Renewal due. You define your own. It has no settings other than its name, and does nothing until a rule and a process step both use it.

Steps

  1. Create the rule type

In the back office, open the menu on the Rule Types folder and create a Rule Type. Name it after the outcome. Save and publish.

  2. Use it on a rule

Open a rule and pick the rule type in its Rule Type field. Every rule needs one. Several rules can share the same rule type.

  3. React to it in a process

On the process, add a Rule Match Outcome step and pick the same rule type in its Rule Match field. Then choose the Actions to carry out when a record matches a rule of that type.

Other places rule type names are used

  • The ruleTypes= option of the RULESET_SUMMARY token uses rule type names, so keep them short and without commas.
  • Rule pages on the AutomatedOn site show each rule's rule type as Type.

What happens next

When a record matches any rule with that rule type, the step's actions run for that record. A No Rule Match Outcome step can handle records that matched no rules at all.
